Before we get into how to make these super easy and budget friendly puzzles, let me explain why your child should be given the opportunity to play and build with puzzles. When your child plays with a puzzle they are strengthening and building three basic skills: cognitive, physical and emotional skills. Cognitive skills is the process of acquiring knowledge and understanding, therfore as they are solving puzzles they are using these skills. The physical skills are used as they hold, turn, twist, toss the puzzle pieces around to put them in their proper place. Their emotional skills are strengthened as they learn patience while putting the puzzle together as well as encouragement to continue on and feeling of accomplishment once it is completed. The look on a childs face when they complete their first puzzle is pure enjoyment and pride.
Alright, lets get into how you can make this easy peasy puzzle at home.
Supplies needed
For my demonstration I used a cereal box, however you can use a picture, coloring page or anything that you feel would make a fun puzzle.
The items that I used were an empty cereal box, scissors and something to write with. With children I'm sure your cereal box will be more colorful and kid friendly.
Four easy steps to make your puzzle at home.
Step 1 - Cut the front of the cereal box off. If your using a piece of paper then you already have step 1 completed.
Step 2 -Turn the cereal box or the piece of paper over and draw your puzzle template on the back. How do you want your puzzle to look? How many pieces? Is this an easy puzzle or challenging? How you design your template will determine these factors.
Step 3 - After you make your template, cut all the pieces out making sure to follow along the lines.
That's it. Your part is complete.
Step 4- Now have your child try to put the pieces back together again. Watch for the amazement once they complete the task.
This is a quick, low budget, family friendly learning activity. You can use many other objects around the house to make puzzles. Be creative.
