Happy New Year! Can you believe it is 2020! Another decade has passed. A fresh start as many say or the new year, new me cliche. However, what about the children. Sure they hear us making these goals and changes in our lives, some needed others because were following the new trend, but are we explaining to them the why behind the what. Are we explaining to our children why we feel we need to make these necessary changes? Why we should eat less, lose weight or learn a new skill ? What about setting new goals and why? Are we giving them an opportunity to reflect on their past year and decide if their are things in their little lives that they may want to change or improve? Maybe they have their own goals. I mean this is the year 2020 children are becoming entrepreneurs, Youtubers and even buying stock. Sorry, that's another blog.
Either way if we don't sit down and have conversations with them we have no idea what they are thinking. There is not a better time than at the beginning of the new year when we are singing out with the old; in with the new. When you are shifting and making change in your life for a better you, provide your child the opportunity to do the same. Here a few ideas of new years resolutions for academic success for children of all ages. To be honest adults can use these too.
These six New Year resolutions are sure to help increase your child's academic performance in school. If practiced consistently, they will help with your child as a whole.
1. Focus on learning, not just grades. Grades are important but if you teach your child how to be a life long learner and the importance of learning then the grades will fall in place.
2.Teach good study habits and study skills. Good study habits are skills that your child will need for the rest of their life. Teach them how to be organized, take good notes, different study skills and test taking skills. Also provide a quiet space to practice these skills.
3. Eat healthier. Provide healthy eating options. A diet rich in foods such as whole grains, oats, pulses, nuts and seeds will help you stay healthy and full of energy. Children need energy to get through their school day.
4.Get more sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, children aged 3-5 need about 11 to 13 hours of sleep every night. Provide a soothing night time ritual and quiet place for this to happen. When children do not receive the proper amount of sleep, WE can tell. (We stands for everyone they come in contact with)
5. Provide opportunity for physical activity. In other words allow them time to exercise. This can be structured or not structured. Sometimes they just need to run and play with no specific rules except for be careful. Let them work off some of that energy so that they can sleep 11 - 13 hours.
6.Communicate more. Practice verbally communicating in a positive way. Teach them how to have a discussion, one person talks while one person listens. Therefore if they are struggling with learning a skill they can discuss that with anyone they feel safe talking too. They should be able to have respectful conversations with adults, their peers and authority figures.
These six new year resolutions, if practiced consistently, will definitely have a positive impact on a students academic performance and become ingrained in their daily ritual. When you sit down and write your 2020 goals have your child join you. Let them share their ideas and then provide a few of the ones I suggested above. Provide a journal for them as well so that they can have a reminder and something to always reflect back on. Your child can write their new years resolution and a few goals to achieve it or if their younger let them draw pictures. Make this an enjoyable experience and life long lesson.
Spreading joy and love to each and everyone of you. Have a blessed and prosperous New Year. Happy Learning! #familyresolutions , #newyearsresolutions, #Happynewyear, #children, #academicsuccess, #childrengoals, #familygoals #kindergardensmarts #parenting #blackparents #teachers #teachourchildren
